We began our study of Chapter 22 this morning. I led the students through the process of active reading - preparing to read a textbook by asking questions based on the title of the chapter or section, reading the section focus and review questions before reading the section, and looking at maps. We read the section about Georgia, looking for answers to these questions and making connections with information we have already learned. Students then read the rest of seciton 1, jotting down ideas in the their notes as they read.
We are going to watch some British Christmas adverts this season. Some large companies in the UK, like John Lewis and Sainsbury, create commercials that are more like mini movies. While their purpose is certainly to sell products, many of these ads are very creative and tell humorous and heart-warming stories. We will watch a few of these over the next three weeks. Quiz over Chapter 22 on Wednesday.

After watching the CNN Student News report on Paris, we studied section 3 of Chapter 20. Students then used their devices to practice locating the nations of the former Soviet Union. After a little time to review for the quest, students demonstrated what they have learned. The quests are graded: the highest scores are 40/40!
We answered questions over Soviet/Russian history today. We also had time to watch two brief videos of St. Petersburg: a quick look at palaces, museums, etc. and a brief Rick Steves video of the longest escalator in the world (in a St. Petersburg subway station). Class ended with the CNN Student News.
Students had time at the beginning of class to complete their maps of Eurasia and/or almanac handout. We worked together to answer questions about Russian history.
We begin our study of Russia today. Students and I read an overview of Russia. Students then worked on political and physical maps of Eurasia, which we will finish in class on Wednesday. The reading assignment is Chapter 20.
Students received their NY Times Upfront 2016 Atlas and Almanac this morning. Keep this with your Geography materials as a 2nd textbook. We learned how to read the information in the almanac, then used a handout to find information and make a few comparisons between countries based on the data. We'll turn in the handout text week.
We finished watching the Rick Steves film about Budapest, then reviewed sections 3 & 4 in preparation for the Quest tomorrow. Study vocab, section review questions and your map of Eastern Europe. The Baltic countries will not be on the map test, as they are not on your map.
Students spent the first part of class completing/studying their map of Central Europe.
Today we visited Budapest. Students completed the film guide as Rick Steves showed us around the city. We learned a bit about history, geography, food, music and thermal baths. The Quest over Chapter 19 will be on Thursday of this week. |
