Students quizzed each other over terms from Chapter 1. Then we divided the class into 4 teams. Each teams answered a question based on ideas from sections 2 and 3. Spokespersons from the teams explained to the class the answers they found and answered questions from the class.
We had a quiz over the terms from Chapter 1. Students choose 10 terms to define from a list of 14. We finished class with an activity based on travel. We watched a video, Dancing 2006 by Matt Harding, in which he films himself in various locations around the globe. From the work students have completed this week, I can see that many students in the Freshman class have excellent study and organizational skills. There are a few students who I will be working with to improve themselves in these areas so they can achieve greater academic success. I you received a low score on the Map Skills: Latitude & Longitude assignment I can meet with you sometime soon for help in completing the assignment. We will talk about this on Wednesday next week. I hope you have a relaxing Labor Day Weekend, the last weekend of summer vacation.

Today we covered two topics.
1. The five themes of geography. Students answered questions about their neighborhoods, cities, and about Redlands which were based on these five themes. I was glad that many students were eager to share their ideas and that their responses indicated higher thinking. 2. Latitude & Longitude. We covered the basic ideas, then plotted locations on a world map. We will continue with a different map on Friday. Please be prepared for a quiz over terms from Chapter 1 on Friday. It will not be multiple-choice. You should be able to define/explain terms from the chapter. Remember to use a variety of study methods as you learn, including teaching someone else. Hi Fellow Geographers,
In our first class we completed an assignment on world events of summer 2014. Working in pairs, students thought of events that have happened over the past few months. We then made a class list of ten events and identified where they took place around the world. After brief discussions of what happened in each case, students located the countries, and in two cases the cities, of these events on a map handout. Each pair of students submitted one assignment. These are now graded and in the Geography file box - your scores are available to view in RenWeb. We spent a little time looking at the syllabus for World Geography. There is a PDF of it on the downloads page which you can view online or download and print if you lose the hard copy distributed in class today. Please remember to check for assignments on the home page and get started reading and studying the first reading assignment in your textbook. Best wishes as you begin your high school experience. I am always here to help you achieve your academic goals. Peace, James Walters |
